In-person projects
Improve a public space, help someone in need, report a community problem, organize a collection, or complete another useful project where you live.
Improve Your State helps people find meaningful remote and in-person community service opportunities, learn how to create useful projects of their own, document what they do, and contribute to a growing community of volunteers helping one another.
Start with the basics: identify a community need, decide what you can realistically accomplish, check permission, prepare, take action, document the result, and reflect on the impact.

Browse Project Ideas →When you complete qualifying service, use the project system to record what you did, submit supporting information or evidence, and have the work independently reviewed.

Improve a public space, help someone in need, report a community problem, organize a collection, or complete another useful project where you live.
Some forms of service can be performed remotely or online, including research, educational work, outreach, digital support, and other approved activities that create a real community benefit.
You can often perform service when it fits your schedule rather than signing up for a fixed shift. The important part is that the activity is legitimate, useful, safe, and properly documented.
Our resource library is available without registration or payment. Use these tools to assess community needs, plan a project, stay safe, organize a cleanup or donation drive, reflect on your work, or keep your own volunteer records.
If you want to keep a verified record of your service, Improve Your State provides a system for submitting completed activities, supporting evidence, service time, and other required information.
People can use Improve Your State simply because they want to help their communities. But when documented service is needed for a school, employer, agency, probation program, or court requirement, the platform can also provide a structured record of qualifying service.
In many cases, properly completed and verified service may be usable toward court-ordered community service requirements, subject to the rules and approval of the court, probation department, or other supervising authority. An Improve Your State account is required to submit and document service.
Improve Your State uses community participation not only to complete projects, but also to help evaluate submitted work and maintain the integrity of the verification process.
Look at the information and evidence another volunteer submitted and compare it with the requirements of the project.
Consider whether the project appears to have been completed, whether the evidence supports the submission, and whether the claimed service time is reasonable.
Peer review helps legitimate service become verified while protecting the system from inaccurate or unsupported submissions. Reviewing can itself be a useful way to contribute.
Verified projects, volunteer hours, participating volunteers, and communities served help show the cumulative effect of people taking useful action.
